Police Force Spokesman Olumuyiwa Adejobi Should be Mere Palace Jester, not Involved in Serious Matters—Sowore

Human rights activist and #RevolutionNow Movement convener, Omoyele Sowore, has criticized Nigeria’s Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, calling him a “palace jester” unfit for any serious environment.

Sowore, a former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), made the remark on Wednesday while appearing in court alongside his legal team.

The Nigeria Police had charged him for referring to the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, as an “illegal IG.”

The activist was initially invited by the police over a video he recorded, exposing police extortion on the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Access Road in Lagos.

He said, “Muyiwa is not supposed to be anywhere near any serious business except in the palace where he is a jester.”

SaharaReporters had reported that the police launched a manhunt for Sowore after he recorded a video during an altercation with police officers in Lagos.

Sources told SaharaReporters that the manhunt was ordered by Force Spokesperson Adejobi, following several days of discussions and repeated appeals to Egbetokun to take action against the activist.

The police eventually issued a formal invitation to Sowore for questioning.

When he responded to the summons, he was detained and subsequently charged with alleged cybercrime.

Initially, the police demanded that Sowore provide a Level 17 officer as surety and surrender his passport.

However, they later lowered the requirement to a Level 16 officer, a move Sowore described as an insult from the Inspector General of Police, Egbetokun.
