Super Eagles Beat Cameroon 2-0 to Reach AFCON Quarter-Finals

Super Eagles advanced to the quarter-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations after defeating Cameroon 2-0 in a thrilling encounter at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny on Saturday.

Ademola Lookman was the hero for the Super Eagles, scoring a brace to secure a famous win over their arch-rivals.

The Atalanta winger opened the scoring in the 36th minute, when he pounced on a through ball from Victor Osimhen’s breakaway and slotted it past the goalkeeper.

He doubled the lead in the 90th minute, when he tapped in a cross from Calvin Bassey at the far post.

Cameroon, who had finished second in Group C behind Senegal, failed to register a shot on target and looked toothless in attack.

The Indomitable Lions, who had won the tournament five times, with three of it at the expense of Nigeria, bowed out in disappointment, while Nigeria celebrated their first win over Cameroon in the knockout stage of the AFCON since 2004.

Nigeria will now face Angola, who impressed in a 3-0 win over Namibia earlier, in the last eight on Friday, also in the Felix Houphouët-Boigny Stadium.

The Super Eagles are aiming to win their fourth AFCON title, and their first since 2013.
