Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken has issued a statement disputing Venezuela’s official election results, declaring opposition candidate Edmundo González Urrutia as the rightful winner of the July 28 presidential election.
Blinken argues that the National Electoral Council’s announcement of Maduro’s victory is “deeply flawed” and lacks credibility.
He references opposition-published tally sheets from over 80% of polling stations, which show that González won by an “insurmountable margin,” as confirmed by independent observers and exit polls.
The U.S. commends the 12 million Venezuelans who voted despite numerous challenges and dismisses Maduro’s accusations against opposition leaders.
Blinken further calls for the release of those arrested for peacefully participating in the election and urges a peaceful transition.
