Veteran Nigerian singer, songwriter, and actress Onyeka Onwenu has passed away at the age of 72.
She died on Tuesday evening at Reddington Hospital in Lagos after collapsing shortly after a performance.
Onwenu had just finished performing at the birthday party of renowned boardroom guru, Mrs. Stella Okoli, when she suddenly slumped.
“It is very sad. Onyeka Onwenu just performed at the birthday of Mrs. Stella Okoli today (Tuesday, July 30, 2024), and after performing, she slumped.
“She was taken to Reddington Hospital and she couldn’t make it,” an eyewitness told TheNiche.
Born on January 31, 1952, Onyeka Onwenu was a prominent figure in the Nigerian music and entertainment industry, earning the nickname “The Elegant Stallion” from the press.
She was not only celebrated for her musical talents, with popular songs like “Ekwe” and “Wait for Me” (a duet with Juju Maestro King Sunny Ade), but also for her contributions to politics and activism.
Throughout her illustrious career, Onwenu held several significant positions, including chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture and Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Centre for Women Development, a position she was appointed to in 2013.
