The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has elected Professor Chris Piwuna, a Consultant Psychiatrist and Professor of Medicine at the University of Jos Teaching Hospital, as its new National President.
Professor Piwuna, who served as the immediate past National Vice President of ASUU and currently holds the position of Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Jos, takes over from Professor Emmanuel Osodeke.
His election took place on Sunday during the union’s 23rd National Delegates Congress, hosted at the University of Benin, Edo State.

Piwuna emerged as the winner in a contest against Professor Adamu Babayo of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi.
Professor Chris Piwuna steps into his new role as ASUU President at a time of growing uncertainty in Nigeria’s higher education landscape. His assumption of office comes amid mounting speculation of a potential industrial action, sparked by controversy over the Federal Government’s sharing formula for the recently released Earned Academic Allowances (EAA).
Persistent issues such as brain drain and systemic challenges continue to weigh heavily on the nation’s tertiary institutions.
Joining Piwuna in the newly constituted national executive are Austen Sado (Vice President), Happiness Uduk (Financial Secretary), Peter Adamu (Treasurer), Celestine Aguoru (Investment Secretary), Aisha Bawa (Welfare Officer), and Kassim Umar (Internal Auditor).
Outgoing President, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, led the union from May 30, 2021, to May 11, 2025. His tenure was marked by strong opposition to government policies like the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS), alongside a consistent push for university revitalisation and greater academic autonomy.
Osodeke was re-elected for a second two-year term in May 2023, during ASUU’s 22nd National Delegates Conference held at the University of Jos.
