Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has named Yechiel Leiter, a U.S.-born former senior official in Israel’s Finance Ministry, as the next Israeli ambassador to the United States.
In a statement released on Friday, Netanyahu praised Leiter for his diplomatic skills, eloquence, and in-depth knowledge of American culture and politics.
“Yechiel Leiter is a highly capable diplomat, an eloquent speaker, and possesses a deep understanding of American culture and politics,” Netanyahu said.
Leiter brings extensive government experience to the role, having previously served as the chief of staff in Israel’s Finance Ministry, as well as deputy director general of the Education Ministry and acting chairman of the Israel Ports Company. In addition, Leiter has personal ties to Israel’s military; his son tragically lost his life during the 2023 Gaza war while serving in the Israeli Defense Forces.

Leiter’s appointment was met with approval from various sectors of Israeli society. Yisrael Ganz, head of the Yesha Council, an umbrella organization representing Jewish settlements in the West Bank, expressed support, noting Leiter’s role in advocating for Jewish communities in the region.
Leiter resides in Gush Etzion, a settlement in the West Bank, and his appointment signals continued strong Israeli-American ties under Netanyahu’s government, especially regarding contentious issues such as settlements and the future of the Palestinian territories.
His appointment follows closely on the heels of Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. presidential election, which was widely celebrated in Israel due to Trump’s strong support for the country.
